Thieves have broken into the home of Olympic swimming champion Rebecca Adlington and stolen her medals.

The gold medallist from the 2008 Games in Beijing said on her Twitter page she was in "absolute pieces".

Within hours of the theft the medals were returned, but a car belonging to her partner is still missing.

Adlington won gold in the 400m and 800m freestyle in Beijing, and claimed bronze medals in the same events four years later in London.

She said the medals were "something I will never be able to replace".

In addition to her Olympic haul, Adlington also claimed two world championship golds, two Commonwealth titles and a European gold.
