An ambulance packed full of explosives has been discovered parked outside the German national stadium, it is being reported.

Security officials are said to have made the chilling discovery as Germany prepare to take on the Netherlands in an international friendly tonight.

The match has now been cancelled as terror chiefs assess the situation which comes just four days after the Paris terror attacks which left 129 on Friday.

The German national team was taken to a secure area of the HDI Arena in Hannover and had not entered the pitch, reports Kreiszeitung.

German policeTerror alert: Police evacuate the HDI Arena prior to the International Friendly match between Germany and Netherlands.

It is thought the 'ambulance' was actually a truck disguised as an emergency vehicle.

The match in Hannover was due to begin at 7.45pm GMT but a security alert saw the police step in at around 6pm to prevent it going ahead.

Reports emerged earlier in the evening that a suspect package, said to be a suitcase, was found at the stadium in Hannover.

Later police confirmed the game had been called off, and that an unidentified object had been found in the stadium.

Many top German officials, including Chancellor Angela Merkel, were scheduled to attend the match to show they will not bow to terrorism.
