A convicted rapist has absconded from Leyhill prison in South Gloucestershire.

Adam Mark was last seen outside the reception area on Tuesday evening and is believed to have walked out sometime between 19:30 BST and 21:30 BST.

Mark, from West Yorkshire, is serving a life sentence for abducting and raping a woman, as well as attempting to abduct and rape two other women.

Police are asking anyone who sees him to call 999.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said the 37-year-old had no connections with the greater Bristol area and was believed to be travelling back to Yorkshire.

Mark is about 5ft 6ins tall, of medium build with short cropped brown hair. He wears a diamond earring in his left ear, is clean shaven and has blue eyes.

He also has tattoos and was wearing a grey tracksuit.

It is not the first time he has absconded from prison.

In January 2008 Mark, who was jailed in the 1996 for the offences committed in Leeds, walked out from North Sea Camp open prison in Lincolnshire.

He was arrested days later in the Skegness area.

A Prison Service spokesperson said it would not comment on individual cases and said the matter was currently being dealt with by the police.

"The number of absconds from open prisons in 2011/12 was the lowest level since central records began, and only those risk-assessed as suitable for open conditions are placed in open prisons," the spokesman said.

"Those who do abscond will be returned to a more secure prison and may face further charges."
