A three-year-old boy has been slapped and burned by a man he squirted with a water pistol, police said.

The boy and two friends, both eight, were playing on Raleigh Road, Stockton, when they wet a man walking past.

Police said the man became angry, slapped the three-year-old boy on the hand and burnt him with a cigarette, leaving him with a slight injury.

Cleveland Police is appealing for witnesses to the alleged assault, which happened at 18:30 BST on Monday.

The man is described as white, over 6ft tall, very thin with a tattoo on one forearm.

He was said to be wearing a white hard hat and a high visibility vest.
