Cecil Womack

Cecil Womack passed away Friday at the age of 65, according to the website soul source.

Womack was living with his wife and longtime musical partner Linda Womack in Africa when he died. According to Soul-Source, he wanted his ashes spread over the river near his home there.

He was the brother of the more well-known soul singer Bobby Womack, but he had a successful and creatively flourishing career of his own.

Cecil was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and he and his brothers Curtis and Bobby had an early group together singing gospel music. Womack was for a time married to legendary Motown singer Mary Wells. After they split, he married Linda Cooke, daughter of Sam Cooke, and they became a recording duo as Womack & Womack.

Womack & Womack made six albums together over a decade-long period in the 1980s and 1990s. Their debut record Love Wars included old school radio staple and club hit "Baby I'm Scared of You." One of the group's best albums was 1988's Conscience, which included No. 3 UK hit (the song never charted in the U.S.) "Teardrops," a moving feature for Linda. A lesser-known gem worth checking out is the "Folk Version" of "M.P.B. (Missing Person's Bureau)," a mix of "M.P.B." which was only available on the song's 12" release.
