Macklemore and Ryan Lewis

Macklemore has apologised to Kendrick Lamar for winning best rap album at the Grammy Awards.

He posted a screen grab of a text he sent to the rapper after he and his musical partner Ryan Lewis picked up the prize.

"You got robbed. I wanted you to win. You should have. It's weird and sucks that I robbed you," he wrote.

"I was gonna say that during the speech. Then the music started playing during my speech and I froze."

He added: "Anyway, you know what it is. Congrats on this year and your music. Appreciate you as an artist and a friend. Much Love."

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis's 2013 album The Heist beat Lamar's Good Kid, M.A.A.D City as well as albums by Kanye West and Drake.

The hip hop duo also won best new artist and best rap song and performance.

Macklemore posted the screen grab of the text on Instagram, writing alongside it that Lamar should have won.

"He deserved best rap album... I'm honoured and completely blown away to win anything much less 4 Grammys," he wrote.

"But in that category, he should have won IMO. And that's taking nothing away from The Heist. Just giving GKMC its proper respect."

He went on to thank their fans and said that performing their track Same Love was a career highlight.

"The greatest honour of all. That's what this is about. Progress and art. Thank you. #grammys," he said.

33 straight and gay couples married during the ceremony while the duo performed on stage with Madonna.

Full list of nominees and winners is on the Grammys website.
