Lewis and Nicole in happier times
Lewis Hamilton dropped the biggest hint yet that he's desperate to get his relationship with Nicole Scherzinger back on track – by dedicating his racing victory to his ex-girlfriend.
The Formula One hero was celebrating winning the Hungarian Grand Prix when he made the emotional tribute during an interview.
The 28-year-old made no effort to hide his pain after his five-year romance with the X Factor stunner drove into the pits.
Hiding his eyes with giant black sunglasses, his voice wobbles as the confident Mercedes driver can't find the strength to say Nicole's name.
He credits his family for their strength and support: "It's not been the easiest few months, I was just saying that my family have been really supportive."
Before alluding to Nicole: "It feels a little bit odd without that someone here - but I would say now that these are one of those races you want to dedicate to that someone."
Lewis Hamilton dedicates the win to Nicole in post-race
Writing on Twitter last week, he said: "If you’ve found that special someone, don't EVER let them go no matter what!! Nothing in this world is more important."
In another post he wrote: "My hideaway – pouring my heart into this track!!" with a picture of himself in his recording studio.
And as the former lovebirds haven't quite made their 21st century split final by unfollowing each other on Twitter, it's bound to pop up on Nicole's feed. Crafty.
A source close to the X Factor judge said she was "heartbroken" following their mutual decision to call it a day.
The pal added: "They'd been talking about marriage so you can imagine how upsetting this whole thing has been for her."
Lewis' voice cracks as he struggles to name his ex
The couple dated on and off for five years and just weeks ago Lewis, 28, hinted he was planning to propose.
But it is believed he and Nicole, 34, who went public with their relationship in 2007, found their busy work schedules made it increasingly difficult for them to spend time together.
Racing driver Lewis said recently about the prospect of popping the question to the former Pussycat Dolls singer: "We’ve been together for five years, which is quite a milestone really.
"But hopefully in the near future. Maybe before we get to six years."
An insider said: "They’re both very busy people and have been forced to spend a lot of time apart.
"Sometimes they would barely see each other for weeks on end. It was hard to keep the relationship going from afar.
"Who knows whether things might change in a year's time. They do still love each other, but they are not together as it stands."
US-based Nicole has regularly been seen cheering on Lewis - who lives in Switzerland - during his various Grand Prix appearances as a driver for the Mercedes team.
She admitted recently: "I only go to a Grand Prix to support Lewis. I am in awe of Formula One because there is so much money, technology and talent.
"But as for the racing, it really is like trying to understand rocket science when I'm there, trackside."
Nicole added: "For me there's only ever one winner and a lot of people would agree with me on that - Lewis is the best."
The last time the couple were pictured together was at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal on June 10.
Since then, Nicole has gone solo at various events, including Wimbledon last week and the Summer Music Festival in Rome.
And she was not at Silverstone on Sunday to see Lewis battle back to fourth place after a dramatic puncture when he was leading the British Grand Prix.
The couple first hit it off when they were introduced at the European Music Awards in Munich in November 2007 and eventually announced to the world they were an item at the Monaco Grand Prix six months later.
But their romance has had its share of ups and downs.
They briefly parted in January 2010 before reconciling. Then they split again in late 2011 and got back together early last year.
