A West Midlands Police officer has been charged with four counts of rape and two of assault.

PC Mandeep Uppal, 32, who is based at Wolverhampton police station, has been suspended pending the outcome of the court case.

It is thought the charges relate to incidents that allegedly happened between 2006 and 2011.

He is due to appear before Warwick Crown Court later for a plea and management case.

In a statement, West Midlands Police said: "We can confirm that the defendant is a serving police constable based at Wolverhampton Police.

"The officer is currently suspended."
