Two men have been jailed for killing a man who died 18 months after being beaten with a baseball bat covered in spikes in Shropshire.

Ismaaeel Rehman, 22, from Dudley, died after having an epileptic seizure on New Year's Day, 2011.

He had suffered serious health problems since being attacked in Dawley in July 2009, Birmingham Crown Court heard.

Jason Noto and Robert Jones, both 24 and from Telford, were jailed for seven years, six months for manslaughter.

Mr Rehman suffered serious head injuries in the assault in Powis Place where he was also hit with a piece of wood.

'Dignity and patience'

Noto, of Powis Place, Dawley Bank, and Jones, from Webb Crescent, Dawley, were convicted of manslaughter at Birmingham on Monday.

A previous trial where they had denied murder at Stafford Crown Court collapsed.

Det Ch Insp Neil Jamieson, of West Mercia Police, said after the men were jailed: "I am satisfied with these convictions in what was an unusual case and am pleased that both men will now serve significant custodial sentences.

"The assault in July 2009 was a brutal one and it is pleasing the jury have found that this was linked to Mr Rehman's death 18 months later."

"This was a complicated, lengthy investigation and I'd like to pay tribute to Mr Rehman's family for the dignity and patience they have shown through the lengthy criminal justice process.

"They have behaved impeccably throughout and been very supportive of our inquiry."
