Soho Hill closed at Villa Road and St Michaels Road junction
Police are stepping up street patrols this weekend as a murder investigation continued into a double shooting in Hockley, which left one man dead and another fighting for life.
A 25-year-old from Handsworth died in hospital after being dropped off at an A&E department with gunshot wounds following 'disorder' in Soho Hill.
A vehicle used to transport him was later recovered by police.
Another man had earlier been rushed to hospital by the emergency services. He remained in critical condition in hospital.
Neither of the shooting victims have been named.
Ladywood MP Shabana Mahmood has demanded an urgent meeting with the Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson and the Chief Constable of West Midlands Police, Chris Sims.
She wrote on Twitter; “Completely shocking news that a life has been lost in the shooting in Hockley. Have demanded urgent meeting with PCC and Chief Constable.”
The scene from Soho Hill
Police were called to Soho Hill following a 999 call from a member of the public who reported seeing ‘disorder’ among a large group of men in the road and hearing the sound of a firearm being discharged at around 4.30am on Friday.
The street was sealed off to allow detectives and forensics specialists to examine the scene.
The attack was less than two miles from another shooting where a gunman opened fire on four people outside a Costcutter in Great Hampton Row. The victims were left with gunshot wounds after the incident on October 10.
A spokesman for West Midlands Police said that it was too early to say if the two incidents were linked.
But Detective Chief Inspector Caroline Marsh appealed for information in connection to the latest shooting. She said: “We are embarking on an extensive CCTV trawl of the area and there is lots of intelligence work going on behind the scenes in a bid to try and understand what may lie behind the shooting.
“I would appeal to anyone who may have been in the Soho Hill area at the time and who saw the incident or anything suspicious to contact West Midlands Police or Crimestoppers.”
