Police are hunting a 'smartly dressed' man after a 23-year-old woman was allegedly sexually assaulted and punched on a Birmingham bus.

The frightening attack happened on the 957 National Express service in Birmingham City Centre at around 3pm on Saturday July 19. Police have only now released details of the incident.

The man, described as being white, early 50s, bald with dark hair on the sides and back of his head, was dressed in a black coat, black trousers and shirt and light-blue tie.

He touched a 23-year-old woman inappropriately and when the woman challenged him, the man punched her in the chest and ran off the bus onto the Coventry Road near to the Swan Shopping Centre.

Dc Leigh O'Neill from the Safer Travel Team said: "This assault traumatised the young woman who was just going about her journey. She had the courage to challenge the man, however she has been very upset by the incident."

Dc O'Neill said: "Local enquiries have been taking place to trace the man but we have not managed to identify him yet. Anyone who knows who this man is should come forward so we can fully investigate. Anyone with information please contact the Safer Travel Team on 101."
