Perry Barr baby death: Man appears in court accused of murder

A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a five-month-old baby girl in Perry Barr.

Tomas Driukas, from Perry Barr, was remanded in custody at Birmingham Magistrates' Court, accused of killing the youngster.

Speaking through an interpreter, he confirmed his name to the court.

The 25-year-old electrician, of Crantock Road, was arrested on suspicion of murder after the baby's death on Wednesday afternoon.

Police had been called to reports that the girl was experiencing breathing difficulties shortly before 1am on Wednesday.

A 22-year-old woman was also arrested, but was bailed on Friday while inquiries continue.

A post-mortem examination revealed the baby died from several injuries, and further tests are being undertaken to find out how she died.

Driukas will appear next at Birmingham Crown Court on Tuesday.
