A child narrowly escaped serious injury when a manhole cover exploded out of the ground in Birmingham.

The youngster was walking with two adults in Warwick Road, Acocks Green, when it suddenly shot out of the ground just missing them as they strolled past at about 12.20pm this afternoon.

The manhole cover was lifted by some form of underground explosion which is being investigated by teams from West Midlands Fire Service.

It is believed the blast was caused by a build-up of gas in an adjacent manhole.

The incident left a one metre deep hole in the pavement.

Utility companies, including gas and electrical teams, have been called to the scene and a cordon has been established around the site while the investigations take place.

According to witnesses, smoke was seen coming from a junction box near the manhole which had become dislodged.

No injuries were reported.
