Man seriously hurt in Birmingham hate crime attack

2012-09-26 21:23:30

A man was seriously injured when he was stabbed with a screwdriver in an attack being treated as a hate crime.

The victim, 27, was targeted after leaving the Libra Sauna in Summer Hill Road, Birmingham, early on 23 September, police said.

A man made abusive comments to him before attacking him and stabbing him in the face, neck and chest.

Police believe the attack, between 03:50 and 04:15 BST, was racially or religiously motivated.

Officers said the man was stabbed after the scuffle moved on to the main road's central reservation. A second man punched and kicked him as he lay in the road, before both attackers escaped in a dark Volkswagen Golf.

'Fight for life'

Police said the victim managed to get a taxi home before being taken to hospital by a friend. His condition has been described as comfortable.

He suffered four stab wounds to his chest, two to his neck and two slash wounds to his face.

Det Con Richard Stott said: "The victim is making a swift recovery but this was a very nasty attack and it could have easily ended very differently."

"Someone must have seen the attack, which happened in the middle of a busy road," he said.

"I would also appeal directly to the people responsible - you've put an innocent man in hospital and he's had to fight for his life - do the right thing and hand yourselves in."

He appealed for witnesses to contact police.
