A man has been jailed for 10 years for strangling his ex-girlfriend in his West Midlands flat.

The body of South Korean student Da In Lee, 22, was found wrapped in bed clothes at Daniel Jones's Grace Road flat in Tipton, in April 2012.

Last month, Jones, 27, who had admitted manslaughter, was cleared of murder.

Ms Lee had been studying international relations and sociology at Birmingham's Aston University but she ended their relationship when it "turned nasty".

Det Sgt Harry May, of West Midlands Police, said the couple's relationship deteriorated and Jones started mentally and physically abusing her.

Mr May said police believed Jones had planned to flee to America, but confessed to his ex-partner about the killing and she then called police.

"This was a particularly sad case, as Da In's family had sent her to England to seek a better education and life.

"Her death has devastated her family back in South Korea," said Mr May.

After last month's hearing, Ms Lee's father Kwan Foo Lee and mother Eun Suk released a statement saying their family had been "ripped apart" by her death.
