A 'loner who downloaded a massive catalogue of vile child porn featuring babies as young as two months old has been jailed.

David Bennett, aged 36, had previously been jailed in 2004 over charges of making indecent images of children.

But even while still subject of a Sex Offences Protection Order in 2010 he again began downloading images of children.

He was caught again in June last year after the National Crime Agency tipped of West Midlands Police about suspicious activity on a computer at Bennett’s Frensham Close address in Chelmsley Wood.

Mark Phillips, prosecuting at Birmingham Crown Court said after a raid on Bennett’s home, police discovered nearly 5,500 indecent images of children.

Over 500 of those were in the worst category based on the abuse shown in the pictures or videos.

After an investigation Bennett pleaded guilty to 14 counts of possession of indecent images of children.

He also admitted two charges of possessing extreme images and one of possessing a prohibited image.

Mr Phillips told the court: “He said he was not surprised by the number of images as he would download them in bulk, view them and delete them.

“He was full and frank in interview.”

Mr Phillips said Bennett’s problem was focused on pornography and that he did not pose a risk to children directly.

David Munro, defending, said: “His previous conviction is obviously relevant and an aggravating factor.

“It also indicates the act of a sad and lonely individual.

“This is a man who has never had any intimate relationship in his life.

“He has comparatively little contact with the outside world.”

Mr Munro said other than occasional shifts as a cleaner for Jaguar Land Rover, Bennett spent all of his time playing games online.

He went on: “He is entirely candid on every aspect of his behaviour.

“He knows he faces a custodial sentence of some length.”

The Recorder of Birmingham His Honour Judge Melbourn Inman jailed Bennett for two years and eight months.

He said: “The nature of the images is of great concern.

“They are at the very high level of seriousness.

“These children were very young indeed and vulnerable. That is a serious aggravating feature.

“You do not have a great deal of insight into the harm that happens because these are real children and have been abused at some stage so people like you get pleasure from viewing it.

“You have no mitigation personally. You still have little insight into the harm this activity can have indirectly.”

Bennett was also made the subject of an indefinite Sexual Offences Prevention order and ordered to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register indefinitely.
