A five-year-old girl has been left critically ill after being hit by a car which failed to stop in Birmingham.

The girl was hit at about 18:30 BST on Tuesday in College Road, Kingstanding, where she had been walking with her mother when they became separated.

Police said a 36-year-old man handed himself into a Birmingham police station at about 23:00 BST.

The girl was taken to hospital with multiple injuries and remains in a critical condition.

Officers said the man was being "voluntarily interviewed" in relation to the collision and said his car had also been seized.

Part of College Road, near the fire station, was shut following the crash. It has since been reopened.
