A man has been jailed for more than seven years after admitting stamping 10 times on a teenager's head in Birmingham city centre.

Piara Purewal, 22, of Capstone Avenue, Hockley, was caught on CCTV stamping on the 18-year-old's head after a row in Broad Street on 9 September.

The victim was left with bleeding on the brain and doctors feared he would lose his sight in one eye

He has since made a full recovery, Birmingham Crown Court heard.

Police said that because of the "ferocity of the attack", they could have been looking at a murder inquiry if the stamping had continued.

'Most sickening attack'

Det Con Sarah McDonnell said the victim, who had been traumatised by the attack, had innocently got caught up in the argument.

She said he was pushed to the ground and stood up, approaching Purewal who then punched the victim, leaving him unconscious, and repeatedly stamped on his head.

She added: "He was lying prone, face down on the floor and unable to defend himself. It was the most cowardly, sickening attack I've ever seen and Purewal has rightly been handed a long jail term for his actions."

Purewal pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He was jailed for a total of seven years and four months.

Two other men were also sentenced in connection with the attack.

Dale Walker, 21, of Chandlers Close, Hockley, and Lance Keating-Hutchinson, 25, of Clissold Street, Winson Green, both admitted the lesser charge of wounding without intent.

They were jailed for 30 months each.
