Girl dies in school coach and car crash

2014-02-24 20:32:52

Police said Valley Road reopened after recovery teams took the coach away

A teenage girl was killed and two people suffered life-threatening injuries when a school coach and a car collided in the West Midlands.

The girl was in a Renault Clio with a woman and a boy, who suffered multiple injuries in the crash in Bloxwich.

Seven children on the coach were shocked but were otherwise unhurt, said police. They were from Shelfield Community Academy in Pelsall.

The crash happened in Valley Road just before 08:15 GMT.

The woman and the boy were taken to the major trauma centre at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire, the ambulance service said.

Valley Road was closed for five hours.

West Midlands Police said officers were carrying out house-to house inquiries and examining CCTV pictures.

The bus came to rest in a garden after knocking down a wall, eyewitnesses said

The force said the dead girl had not yet been formally identified.

'Death Alley'

Beverley Whitehouse, 45, who lives on Valley Road heard the crash.

"I ran up to my bathroom and looked out of the window. I saw the black car in the middle of the road and the coach was in a garden. It had knocked the wall down," she said.

Her partner Michael Saxon, 46, said: "It's always been a bad road - it's nicknamed Death Alley.

"The council know it's a bad junction. There's no stop signs or give-way signs, nothing.

"I just hope now the council does something about it."

Scene visited

In a statement, Shelfield Community Academy said pupils who were on the coach were safe and parents had been informed.

It said the dead girl was not a student at the school.

Principal Paula Ward said: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the young girl who died today.

"A member of our senior team visited the scene of the accident to ensure that our students were safe and well and counselling has been offered to all students affected."
