This is the moment a knife-wielding thug stabbed a student outside a south Birmingham college.

Valentine Cannings was jailed on Friday after he plunged a blade into 17-year-old Kevin Linongi's stomach and left him for dead at Bournville College's Longbridge Lane campus in October.

Mr Linongi suffered huge blood loss and was in intensive care at Queen Elizabeth Hospital for two days.

Cannings, 22, of Longfield Road, Northfield, was jailed for seven years by Recorder Nicholas Dean QC at Birmingham Crown Court.

The college, which has 15,000 students, was shut down for a time and the incident led to calls on the college's Facebook page for security improvements.

Cannings had previously admitted a charge of wounding with intent.

Lal Amarasinghe, prosecuting, told the court that Cannings has repeatedly asked Mr Linongi for a fight after what he termed an "exchange of words."

He said Cannings appeared to have been staring at the victim, an information technology student, earlier that day in the college library.
