A man was dragged along a road for several hundred metres as he tried to stop a thief taking his car in Dudley.

The 48-year-old man suffered serious leg injuries in the incident, which happened as the thief drove away with the car in Bird Street, Lower Gornal.

Police said the man chased the red and silver Mitsubishi 4x4 pick-up vehicle and grabbed hold of an attached trailer carrying boxes of apples.

The man, who eventually let go, is being treated in hospital for injuries.

The road was closed for several hours after the incident on Monday afternoon.

The car was seen driving towards Brook Street.
