Birmingham nursery worker assaulted toddlers

A woman has been given a 12-month community order for assaulting toddlers in her care at a Birmingham nursery.

Kehren Sajid, 31, was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court after being found guilty of five counts of common assault at an earlier hearing.

She was found guilty of assaulting four children at the Small Talk Nurseries in Handsworth last year, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said.

Sajid of Victoria Road, Handsworth, was spotted mistreating children on CCTV.

Nicola Health, senior crown prosecutor from West Midlands CPS, said: "Her offences only came to light when members of staff at the nursery were looking at the CCTV on an unrelated matter.

'Very rough manner'

"They then came across footage of what she was doing and they became concerned at the way Sajid was treating the children, who were all aged between 12 and 18 months old, and reported the matter to the police.

"The footage was the key evidence in this prosecution as it showed Sajid handling the children in a very rough manner, examples of this being a child thrown onto a bed, children being carried or held in the air by one arm."

Ranjit Singh, the managing director of the nursery, said the management "were shocked by what they saw" on the CCTV footage, and immediately suspended Sajid and contacted the authorities.

Ms Health said the CCTV covered about two weeks so "showed her mistreatment of the children to be persistent".

"Parents and guardians should have the confidence that when they are leaving their children in a nursery, they are leaving them with someone that they can trust. Kehren Sajid has been found guilty of abusing that trust," she said.
