granted a bar licence

A nudist hotel will be allowed to serve its customers alcohol despite fears that it would lead to "a rise in inappropriate behaviour".

Tim Higgs, owner of the Clover Spa and Hotel in Erdington, Birmingham, said he was delighted with the decision.

Licensing councillors were concerned the venue might "become a magnet for troublesome individuals" but they granted a licence anyway.

But Mr Higgs said: "It is a respectable venue - people cannot just walk in."

The venue opened in 2011, claiming to be the UK's first nudist hotel and spa.

Since then there have only been two complaints about the Chester Road hotel's guests, Mr Higgs said in a statement to councillors.

"They were both from my neighbour who wanted clarification on nude sunbathing in the garden," he said.

"But the police told them it was entirely lawful."

Under the conditions of the licence, Mr Higgs will be allowed to serve alcohol until 22:00 BST on during the week, and until 23:30 BST on Fridays and Saturdays.
