Thousand took to Twitter to express their support for the reformed ex-prisoner, with '50p man' trending on the social media site.

A Facebook page, called 50p Man Smoggy, was 'liked' by 1,700 people, many of whom posted glowing comments.

He also won over celebrity fans including London dance troupe Rudimental. The band wrote on Twitter: "I challenge you to watch #benefitsstreet and not be inspired by the 50p man! What a legend!"
