A baby has been named after the paramedic who delivered her in a broken-down lift.

Ella Nicola's mother Melissa Cavanagh went through labour while trapped in the elevator in a block of flats in the Black Country.

Paramedic Nikki Wildman was also stuck in the lift and delivered the girl on Friday afternoon.

The mother was on the ninth floor of the flats which is why ambulance staff chose not to use the stairs.

'We panicked'

It took firefighters about 45 minutes to get to those trapped, who included Ella's father Paul Yeomans and other ambulance service staff.

Ms Cavanagh, now a mother of three, said: "Neither of us like lifts at the best of times so when it got stuck we panicked."

She said ambulance staff had calmed them down, and added: "We thought it only appropriate to make Ella's middle name Nicola, after all the work that her namesake did to deliver her."

Ms Wildman said she was not initially worried when the lift at the flats, on Reservoir Road, Rowley Regis, stopped.

She said: "We called up the ambulance control room to request the fire services assistance and waited.

"About 20 minutes later, we were all still in the lift when Melissa's contractions started to get a lot closer together.

"We all looked at each other because we knew the baby wasn't going to wait for the lift to be repaired."
