This is the dramatic moment armed police arrested a man in Bordesley Green on Wednesday afternoon in front of astonished onlookers.

Pictures taken by a retired cop show plainclothes police wrestling a man to the ground and one officer then points a gun at the suspect.

A number of officers wearing black and white baseball hats can be seen surrounding a silver Volkswagen car.

The incident took place at lunchtime on Wednesday at the busy junction of Bordesley Green and Belchers Lane.

The eyewitness said he had been taking pictures of Bordesley Green East, as part of his current job as an accident investigator when he captured the dramatic scenes.

He said: "I heard the commotion behind me and looked round and saw them. I heard a lot of shouting which is normal practice when police do a stop like that. They all shout at the person in the car, warn them that they are armed officers and shout at them to get out the car.

"They were barking their instructions to the person inside the car."

The retired officer, who asked to remain anonymous, said there were no shots fired but said police had been 'quick and professional' in forcing the driver to stop, blocking his vehicle in.

"I could see at least eight police officers wearing baseball caps. It looked as if they had blocked him in,’" he said.

"I saw some police officers running from a car from behind as well.

"They were just taking the man out the car and shouting at him to get out of the car, then they secured him and were keeping an eye on him.

"It was all over quickly. By the time he was out the car, it was done in about 15 seconds, so it was quite quick. Quick and professional."

The extraordinary broad daylight scenes attracted onlookers from local shops and the nearby bus stop.

The incident caused chaos on the roads as drivers were forced to queue up behind the cluster of unmarked police cars.

West Midlands Police confirmed that a man had been arrested at Belchers Lane at 1.40pm this afternoon. The arrest is believed to be part of an ongoing investigation.
